CYO Athletics 2010-2011
Program overview and philosophy
At St. Benedict School all students are welcome to participate in extra curricular athletics. The school utilizes the Seattle Archdiocese’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) to run its after school programs. Students compete against other CYO teams during each sport's season.
CYO is committed to the dignity and worth of each child it serves, regardless of physical talents, mental strength, or emotional health, and hopes that the same respect for life will become a part of his or her value system. CYO wants each child to know that they are wanted and loved.
Read more on the CYO philosophy, below.
Summer Sports update, August 2010
August countdown to soccer and cross-country has begun!
We're lining up parent coaches, so please be sure to call me if you can coach your child's team so that we can discuss the requirements.
The first soccer meeting was held July 26th, and Geoff Saunders and I discussed issues like coaching requirements, practice field availability, equipment.
We register teams by August 13th, which is why registration closed June 16th. Except for new students and Kindergartners.
That way we know how many teams to register and line up coaches.
Coaches: call me or Geff for your equipment. I'm happy to drop it off or you can pick it up at my place.
Parents and players: Expect a call from your coach with practice times and places. Some teams won't start until the first week of school, but others will try to start mid-August. No one will be penalized for missing practices prior to school starting. We know that late summer holidays are the best!
If prior to August 13th, we know that we can't register a team, we try to find spots on rosters for neighboring partner schools such as St. Johns/St. Als, St. Catherine, or others. In these cases, we work with you as best we can. We want everyone to have an opportunity to play.
Changes:
One of the policies for our CK/StBens Panthers teams on paper has been to have "term limits" for coaches, so that the opportunities to volunteer can be broadened. Remember, the time you spend helping with sports applies to your volunteer service hours at school.
This term limit policy has not been upheld in sports such as cross-country and track, because we've had a dedicated, consistent coach in Coach Tom. He'll still be a huge part of the program, but with the growing numbers of athletes, Coach Tom will primarily focus on the older runners in cross country and track.
In order to be consistent, and to be fair to all potential parent coaches, we are opening up the head coaching opportunities for all sports this season.
Please reach me with any questions or concerns about CYO sports at 206.547.2371 or email stbenssports@gmail.com or StBensSports@hotmail.com.
Important note for 2010-2011
Below on this page is a link for the CYO Athletic Registration Form for the 2010-2011 School Year plus the CYO Code of Conduct. For participation in CYO Athletics, please complete both forms and turn-in to the school office with the appropriate fee.
Please note in the case of team sports where we do not have enough registrants to form a team, every effort will be made to find your child a team with a neighboring parish.
You may also join the Booster Club. This is a convenient and economical way to register all your kids for as many sports as they wish and show your support for St. Benedict/CKS Athletics. If you choose to join the Booster Club, please record which sports you wish to participate. Remember, the Booster Club is not just for students and their families. Please consider friends, family and other members of our community who may wish to show their support of our kids and Athletic Program.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your CYO Athletic Director at the contact information below.

::CYO Athletics Spring Update::
Paul Krause
We are in the home stretch of this year's sports season. Track is underway and registration for Soccer for next year is officially open! We'll be sending reminders for soccer registration every week until the end of school, because you need to register by June 16th for next year (the exception is for students who will be new to St. Ben's next year, who will be able to register in the Fall).
For returning and prospective coaches, we will have a meeting early June to prepare for next Fall. Stay tuned for an email announcing the date.
Please keep in mind that CYO sports holds to a different standard than AAU or many other community sports programs. While many programs stress winning at all costs, CYO sports does not encourage this type of athletics. Here's a good summary directly from the CYO Athletics site regarding the playing time policy:
Youth sports culture today is geared toward winning and the age where winning takes precedence over playing time keeps getting younger and younger. We must recognize that in order for our youth to grow, to develop and to have fun, they must play. Particularly at the elementary, but even the junior high level, athletics should have a focus toward developing skills and a love of sport. At the same time, this development should not be granted to one and forsaken for another. In addition, a key theme of Catholic Social Teaching is the sanctity of human life and the dignity of all persons. CYO Athletics supports this through its playing time policies. Each sport has a playing time policy to ensure the participation, enjoyment and development of all CYO Athletes. Infractions of the playing time policy will result in warning for the 1st offense and a suspension for the offending coach for the 2nd (and any subsequent offenses).

Philosophy of CYO Athletics
Athletic programs are seen as one way of implementing the mission of the CYO. Program goals include:
- To increase self-confidence and self-reliance.
- To increase interpersonal competence.
- To increase a sense of caring toward others.
The sense of caring fostered by CYO Athletics helps athletes understand the aspect of service to others, and helps them better understand their sense of belonging. Youth are brought together from different parishes, schools and social backgrounds in an atmosphere that fosters the recognition of individual strengths and limitations, the lessons of winning and losing, and respect for all involved: fellow players, opponents, coaches, and officials. In other words, CYO is in the business of teaching life values that aid boys and girls in their development towards adulthood. It is worth noting that CYO Athletics is not viewed primarily as a sport developmental program.
At practices, each youth will receive equal attention regardless of playing ability. The goal of CYO coaches should be to assist every player on his or her team to utilize their God-given talents to the best of their ability in the hope that each child will leave the season with a feeling of individual accomplishment and an increased sense of self-worth. To accomplish this, it may be necessary to limit the number of participants on a team.
Each child who faithfully attends practice must be given an opportunity to play in actual games. The degree of participation, while depending on many variables, will basically reflect the concern the coach has for each child. Each parish in this regard may determine specifics, but CYO expects each player, at a minimum to play 1/4 of the season in game or match competition.
