CYO Athletics 2009-2010
Program overview and philosophy
At St. Benedict School all students are welcome to participate in extra curricular athletics. The school utilizes the Seattle Archdiocese’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) to run its after school programs. Students compete against other CYO teams during each sport's season.
CYO is committed to the dignity and worth of each child it serves, regardless of physical talents, mental strength, or emotional health, and hopes that the same respect for life will become a part of his or her value system. CYO wants each child to know that they are wanted and loved.
Read more on the CYO philosophy, below.

Important Information Regarding CYO Registration for 2009-2010
Below on this page is a link for the CYO Athletic Registration Form for the 2009-2010 School Year plus the CYO Code of Conduct. For participation in CYO Athletics, please complete both forms and turn-in to the school office with the appropriate fee.
Please note in the case of team sports where we do not have enough registrants to form a team, every effort will be made to find your child a team with a neighboring parish.
You may also join the Booster Club. This is a convenient and economical way to register all your kids for as many sports as they wish and show your support for St. Benedict/CKS Athletics. If you choose to join the Booster Club, please record which sports you wish to participate. Remember, the Booster Club is not just for students and their families. Please consider friends, family and other members of our community who may wish to show their support of our kids and Athletic Program.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your CYO Athletic Director at the contact information below.

Cross Country and Soccer recaps
First, XC:
When I asked Coach Tom to write a season recap, I had a feeling I might need to edit it down a tad. So from the two paragraphs he sent me, I think this one sentence sums it up well: "We had a great cross country season this year!"
I stopped by the ceremony at season's end, and it was touching when the parents and runners thanked Tom. We're blessed to have great coaches like Tom, and Camille Baltuck and other parents who assisted in cross country.
I don't want to scare prospective coaches away, but all CYO coaches put in some solid hours in training and preparation before even starting the first practice. It's a huge commitment, but is vital for the kids being able to field teams and to provide a safe environment.. So thank you, Coaches. Any parents who would like to coach and whose schedule allows, please contact me.
Soccer (futball)
This was the first year that Kindergarten teams were added to CYO soccer, and there was a huge turnout. Coach Jim Westling really stepped up and did a stellar job with his K team.
Pre-school parents: Get ready for next year! Registrations for soccer will actually be in the Spring for all grades, towards the end of this school year for the following year. The exception is for new students to the school/parish in the Fall who wish to participate. Sports can be a great way for kids to make new friends and strengthen existing bonds.
There are two parent coaches that I really have to give a special thanks to: Susie Sandberg and David Pina. We did not have a coach for 4th Grade girls, but we had a team that really wanted to play. Susie stepped up and did a tremendous job. She really exemplified what CYO is all about in the way that she coached the girls.
David Pina truly stepped up, as well. We did not have coaches -- any coaches! -- for two 1st Grade teams. I asked David if there was a chance at all. He said if his schedule could work out, and did step up. Within a week he was at the coaches meeting and the Play Like a Champion training based on Notre Dame's coaching courses. (Please, no jokes about ND's own coaching situation. That would be way too easy and not nice.)
Bottom line is that he is a natural at coaching and the season was a great success. We really partnered with Christ The King well, and that is a great opportunity to make friends from a different school and parish. I'm leaving out a lot of parents who also coached and helped tremendously. But these two coaches really saved the day for the kids. And that's what the program is for, of course: the children. There were no reports of any unsportsmanlike conduct from Panther players; in this day and age, that is truly a point of pride.
Currently, basketball season is underway. Between Christ The King and St. Benedict, we have five teams: 4th Girls; 4th Boys; 6th Girls; 6th Boys; 7th Boys. And for the grades we did not field teams, neighboring parishes/schools took our kids in to play on their teams. That's the nice thing about CYO. If we can't field a team, we try our best to get the kids on other teams if they want.
What's next? Volleyball! 5th-8th Grade boys and girls are eligible. If you know players that are in the parish but don't go to St. Benedict School, spread the word that they are welcome to register. CYO is a parish-wide program. Official registration is Jan. 15th, but that is the date we need to let CYO know if we can field teams. I've got a number of registrants already, and will send emails by class to parents so that if we are close to forming a team, we can get the word out and try to recruit prior to the deadline.
Very important. One of the new requirements this year of all coaches, parents and players is to be trained to recognize the signs of concussions.
We've all read the recent reports about the damage sports-related head injuries can cause both short and long-term. This is serious stuff. It is absolutely crucial that any player who shows signs of a concussion be treated by a health professional and kept out of practice/play. The brain is especially vulnerable while healing from any kind of trauma. I learned that info, and other important things by watching the online video that is quite well put-together and backed by community health leaders such as Children's Hospital.
To view the video, which counts as training towards the concussion awareness requirement, here is the link: http://www.mywiaa.org/lystedt/default.htm
We'll need to have records to show CYO that we are in compliance, so look for forms and instructions to be sent soon. Sorry for all the paperwork needed for CYO sports, but it is all for the good of the kids and for administrative purposes.
Oh yes, remember that we have Track and Field to look forward to in the Spring. But let's not jump too far forward just yet. I was trying to work in a long-jump pun there.
It is 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside as I write this. Basketball weather!
Thanks,
Paul Krause

Philosophy of CYO Athletics
Athletic programs are seen as one way of implementing the mission of the CYO. Program goals include:
- To increase self-confidence and self-reliance.
- To increase interpersonal competence.
- To increase a sense of caring toward others.
The sense of caring fostered by CYO Athletics helps athletes understand the aspect of service to others, and helps them better understand their sense of belonging. Youth are brought together from different parishes, schools and social backgrounds in an atmosphere that fosters the recognition of individual strengths and limitations, the lessons of winning and losing, and respect for all involved: fellow players, opponents, coaches, and officials. In other words, CYO is in the business of teaching life values that aid boys and girls in their development towards adulthood. It is worth noting that CYO Athletics is not viewed primarily as a sport developmental program.
At practices, each youth will receive equal attention regardless of playing ability. The goal of CYO coaches should be to assist every player on his or her team to utilize their God-given talents to the best of their ability in the hope that each child will leave the season with a feeling of individual accomplishment and an increased sense of self-worth. To accomplish this, it may be necessary to limit the number of participants on a team.
Each child who faithfully attends practice must be given an opportunity to play in actual games. The degree of participation, while depending on many variables, will basically reflect the concern the coach has for each child. Each parish in this regard may determine specifics, but CYO expects each player, at a minimum to play 1/4 of the season in game or match competition.
