CurriculumCurriculum at St. Benedict School is aligned with the Washington State “Essential Academic Learning Requirement” (EALRs) standards as described on the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Instruction (OSPI) website at http://www.k12.wa.us/CurriculumInstruct/EALR_GLE.aspx.In addition to Pre-K through 8th grade course offerings in Reading, Language Arts, and Math, St. Benedict School offers students instruction in Physical Education, Visual Arts, Music, Spanish, Technology and 8th grade Algebra. St. Benedict teachers prepare and deliver a rigorous curriculum using textbooks, online resources, hands-on activities and field experiences. All teachers are certificated by the State of Washington.
Religious EducationIn the Catholic tradition, students learn to know and love God through the gospel message of Jesus Christ. Old Testament Bible study is also included in the Pre-K through 8th grade Religion curriculum. St. Benedict students build community through service. We expect students to model compassion at school and in their community. Each student develops an awareness of social justice issues as they affect our nation and the world. We guide children to see God’s intentions, celebrate Christian values and live as a disciple of Christ in a contemporary society.
Social Skills DevelopmentSt. Benedict School children are active participants in a variety of social groupings throughout the day. Interaction between grade levels is common. Older students at St. Benedict School have the responsibility to act as positive role models for younger children. Consequently, St. Benedict School students create a nurturing, caring environment in which to learn and play. All students are encouraged to self-regulate behavior with the guidance of adults at school. Each student reflects on his or her actions and how those actions affect others. In addition to learning how to work effectively in the classroom, children also develop an internal discipline system that helps them focus on learning throughout their school career and beyond. In addition to developing strong learning practices, we provide Second Step instruction, a classroom-based social skills program taught in Pre-K through 8th grade. Second Step helps students build empathy, manage impulse control and address conflict management concerns. Our teachers also embrace the philosophy of Jim Fay and David Funk’s Teaching with Love and Logic, which helps students develop their own sense of self-discipline and independent problem solving skills in positive, supportive ways. |
